Kelewele (Spicy fried plantains) (Ghanaian) (vegan)


The staple dish with plantains (you can replace them with regular bananas if you can't find any) from Ghana. The plantains are sliced, imbued with a certain selection of spices, then pan-fried until hot and crispy. 
You can use it as a side dish for a heartier main, or as a meal by itself. Super-fast and easy to make. Enjoy. :)

Three years ago: Italian sunset (cocktail), Amaretto (almond liquor) cupcakes and Chicken and avocado salad.




Ingredients (serves 2-3):
  • 1 kg firm plantains (light green to yellow)
  • 20 ml vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

Peel the plantains and slice them into 1-1,5 cm thick slices. Heat the oil in a large pan. Add all the spices except the salt and mix well for a couple of minutes. Add the plantain slices:

Mix well once every couple of minutes. Be gentle so you don't smash the delicate slices, which will become softer and softer as they cook. Keep frying them until they all look nicely browned and crispy (10-12 minutes). Season with salt.

Remove from the heat and transfer to serving plates. It's done, dig in!
